Hot-rolled coils (HRC) are a type of sheet product resembling a wound steel strip and are produced at hot-rolling mills. These products are widely used for construction, the machine industry, car manufacturing, the production of general-purpose, construction, oil and gas and special-purpose pipes, and as a work-piece for the further production of cold-rolled products.

Hot-rolled steel coils application

Hot-rolled coil is used to manufacture steel structures, pipes and closed sections, as well as to enclose structures and facade elements. Shaped and round pipes are mainly used in this industry for:

  • Support steel structures and frameworks of industrial and civil facilities

  • Protective enclosures for various utility lines (wires and cables, plastic or other channels)

  • Support of main pipelines, water lines and heat supply networks, bridges and trestles

  • Sewerage lines, flue ducts and ventilation systems

  • For road construction – poles, guides, drainage elements, lighting columns and crash barriers

  • Steel structures for use in sports grounds and children's playgrounds, to erect fences and partitions, and in other solutions

The key requirements of this segment to this kind of rolled product include minimum dimension tolerances, heavy coil weight, weldability, high strength and toughness, crack resistance (also at negative temperatures) and, for some specific spheres, exterior resistance. Recently, there has been a trend of cold-rolled steel products being replaced with less expensive, thin hot-rolled products in the construction segment. However, high-strength rolled product types are now widely being used to reduce the product weight.

Hot-rolled steel coils for manufacture of large diameter pipes

Large-diameter pipes from HRC steel are produced with spiral seams. Such technology allows to produce pipes with a diameter of up to 2,520 mm for the following segments:

  • Main pipelines for transportation of oil, gas and other substances

  • Process pipelines, heat supply networks, water lines and sewerage lines

  • Supports for industrial facilities, bridges and trestles, elements of onshore and offshore platforms

For these purposes, the hot-rolled steel sheet needs to be in coils weighing up to 32 tonnes, which makes it possible to increase equipment capacity and yield. The HRC should have such properties as good weldability, high strength and toughness, and crack resistance (also at negative temperatures). Given the increased aggressiveness of transported substances, demand is growing for rolled steel with guaranteed resistance to hydrogen sulphide media (HIC, SSC). Higher process pressure inside pipelines entails the need to use pipes with thicker walls and made of high-strength steel grades like X60-Х100.

Hot-rolled steel coils for re-rolling

A significant amount of global HRC steel output is used as a feedstock to make cold-rolled steel products. Key requirements for HRC include a narrow dimensional tolerance range, plasticity, high surface quality, as well as the absence of rust, external and internal defects.

Hot-rolled coils are subject to acid pickling to clean their surfaces from rust and other contaminants prior to cold rolling. Cold-rolled coil producers who do not have pickling lines or are limited in their use place orders for hot rolled products that have already been pickled and/or oiled.

Hot-rolled steel coils for the machine industry

Hot-rolled steel in coils is widely used in the following segments of the machine industry:

  • Machine tool engineering and heavy engineering (bodies and components of machine tools, mining, road and handling machinery)

  • Automotive engineering (bodies of cars and trucks, elements of lining for freight wagons, tanks, booms of truck-mounted cranes, etc)

  • To manufacture agricultural machinery components (ploughs, blades, harrows, parts of seeding machines and bodies of agricultural machinery)

More extensive use of high-strength, low-alloy rolled steel (dual-phase steels, TMCP steel, etc) can reduce the weight of machinery and equipment and, thus, increase their lifting (carrying) capacity and operation efficiency.

Hot-rolled steel coils for service metal centres

The end consumers of service metal centres are machine engineering enterprises, shipbuilders, wind generation plants, boiler equipment manufacturers, etc. Due to the varying scope of applications for steel products, service metal centres consume a wide range of steel product grades and sizes. The HRC should have extremely precise size dimensions, uniform mechanical characteristics and low internal stresses for laser and plasma cutting at fully automated plants.

Hot-rolled steel coils classification

Hot-rolled steel coils are used in various industries, and each industry requires certain specific quality parameters of finished products that are grouped into standards. The main standards for technical specifications that apply to HRC production are:

  • European standards: EN 10025, EN 10028, EN 10111, EN 10149, DIN 17100, EN 10083, EN 10120

  • Ukraine and CIS standards: DSTU EN 10025, DSTU 2834 / GOST 16523, GOST 14637, GOST 1577, DSTU 7808 / GOST 4041, GOST 17066, DSTU 8541 / GOST 19281, GOST 8568, GOST 5521

  • US standards: ASTM A36/A36M, ASTM A1011/A1011M, ASTM A568, American Petroleum Institute (API) standards, etc

Production of hot-rolled coils

Hot-rolled coil (wide strip) products are produced by semi-continuous or continuous hot-rolling mills, which can also be a part of compact strip production plants.

Continuously cast or rolled slabs made of carbon, low-alloy and alloy steel grades are used as a semi-finished product to make steel coils. The HRC production process includes the following stages:

  • Heating the slab for rolling in a reheating furnace (the heating temperature is regulated depending on the steel grade and the selected process conditions)

  • Hydraulic descaler to remove scale from the surface of the feedstock

  • Rolling in roughing and finishing stands with intermediate rewinding or without rewinding of the semi-finished strip in a coilbox unit

  • Monitoring the cooling of the rolled strip

  • Winding the finished products on downcoilers

  • Finishing the hot-rolled steel coils, ie cutting, acceptance, packaging, labelling, etc
