Application of sections and structurals

Sections can made of carbon, low alloy and alloy steels in accordance with international, national, and sector-specific standards. They are available in various shapes and sizes, with different mechanical properties and process parameters depending on application.

Squares are used to make machinery components and structural members. Heavy sections are used to roll profiles and structurals.

Round sections are used as feedstock to manufacture machinery parts (shafts, sleeves, axles, etc) and fastenings, and reinforce concrete structures. Large rounds are used as feedstock to make seamless pipes.

Hexahedrons are used to manufacture various fasteners (bolts, nuts, etc), parts of machinery and mechanisms. In addition, special hollow hexahedrons are used in the oil industry for drilling.

Strips are used to make steel structures, cutting tools and bent profiles (channels and angles), carriage springs for vehicles, decoration elements for arches, columns, etc.

Angles (equal and unequal) are used in construction for window and door openings and arches, decoration elements, rebar fixing and reinforcement of concrete walls and floors. They are also used in wagon-building, the automotive industry, heavy engineering and the furniture industry.

Channels are primarily used in construction to install load-bearing structures and floors, as well as to make storage equipment, racks and wagons, and in the automotive industry.

Beams are mainly used in construction for flooring, support structures, bridges, overhead runways, etc, as well as in machine-engineering and wagon-building.

Flat bulbs are used as stiffeners to fabricate large structures from steel plates in the construction of ship hulls. Thanks to their round shape and reinforcing ability, flat bulbs offer high resistance to camber in the lower part of ship hulls.

Rails are the elements of the upper part of rail tracks; they are designed for rolling stock, metro trains, trams, locomotives, ore railcars, monorails, crane trolleys, lifting cranes and others.

Steel grinding balls are used in ore and coal mining, the cement and other industries, and ball mills as grinding media.

Rebar is a metal bar used to reinforce concrete structures. Being the main element of such structures, it determines their accuracy, integrity and reliability.

Wire rod is used for further redrawing into wire to produce electrodes and welding wire, ropes, reinforcement strands, fibre and so on. In addition, wire rod is used to produce reinforced concrete items and to make telegraph wires and cables.

Classification of rolled steel sections

Rolled sections are classified by the following criteria.

  • Shape

    • Simple geometry (square, round, hexahedron and rectangular)

    • Complex shape – structurals (channels, rails, H-beams, angles, sheet pile, special profiles, etc)

  • Size

    • Heavy sections (H-beam for universal columns, rails for main lines, angles, heavy channels and beams, rounds bigger than 80 mm in diameter, squares with side of up to 250 mm, etc)

    • Medium sections (rounds from 32 to 75 mm in diameter, squares 32-65 mm in size, beams and channels up to 300 mm in height, narrow-gauge rails, sector-specific profiles, rebar #32-60, etc)

    • Light sections (rounds and rebar up to 32 mm in diameter, channels up to 100 mm in height, squares with sides of up to 30 mm and other profiles)

    • Wire rod (4-16 mm in diameter, in coils and bundles)

  • Application

    • General purpose: rounds, squares, strips, angles, channels, beams, etc.

    • Special purpose: rails and sections for shipbuilding (e.g. flat bulbs), auto and wagon building, construction, etc

Manufacturing of rolled sections

The following methods are used for to roll sections.

  • Longitudinal rolling – This is most commonly used to manufacture sections and structurals. During longitudinal rolling, the rolls rotate in various directions, take in the feedstock, deform it and transfer it transversely to their axis.

  • Transverse rolling – This is used to manufacture special profiles (balls, axles, etc). During transverse rolling, rolls rotating in one direction rotate the feedstock and deform it transversely.

  • Hot-rolling – This includes reheating feedstock in reheating furnaces with further deformation of feedstock by consecutive rolling in stands with rolls that have different pass shapes.

  • After rolling – The product is cut to length and cooled, then is tested and packaged.

Rolling mills are classified by the following criteria.

  • Purpose – Rail and structural mills, heavy-section rolling mills, medium-section rolling mills, light-section rolling mills, wire rod mills, and special-purpose mills (ring rolling mills, ball rolling mills, etc). The combined light section and wire rod mills are also commonly used.

  • Number and arrangement of rolls in working stands – Two high (duo) mills, three high (trio) mills, and universal four high mills (two horizontal and two vertical rolls)

  • Arrangement of working stands – Single stand mills (for example, blooming mills), linear mills (stands are arranged in one or more lines), multi-stand mills, consecutive rolling mills, and semi-continuous and continuous rolling mills
