Metinvest Polytechnic: “Technical Education Is the Foundation of a Country’s Future Competitiveness”

In the context of a shortage of skilled staff, technical education has emerged as the main factor in restoring, modernising and ensuring Ukraine’s competitiveness on the global market. This view was expressed by Konstantyn Moiseyenko, Head of the Department of Education Quality Management and Accreditation at Metinvest Polytechnic, during the Education of the New Ukraine conference, held on 27 May in Kyiv.

The conference focused on issues of security, the modernisation of Ukraine’s educational infrastructure, contemporary teaching methods and the global competitiveness of Ukrainian education. Discussions also addressed coordination between the state and business, the development of vocational and technical education and the country’s post-war reconstruction.

The event brought together more than 500 participants, including representatives from government, business, the educational community, youth and opinion leaders. It was organised by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine under the auspices of the Office of the President. Metinvest Group served as a partner of the conference.

Moiseyenko joined the panel entitled “Convenience and Safety: How Learning Infrastructure Has Changed”. The discussion featured Oleksii Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine - Minister for Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine; Olena Kovalska, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine; Yevhen Kudriavets, First Deputy Minister of Education and Science; Ivan Fedorov, Head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration; and Rostyslav Dyuk, Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Association of FinTech and Innovative Companies.

The Metinvest Polytechnic representative noted that amid a staff shortage, businesses are realising that technical and STEAM education is the foundation for Ukraine’s future competitiveness. Cooperation between business and the state in this area can cover several directions.

Moiseyenko said: “First, businesses must actively enter the educational environment, from schools to universities, and help transfer technology and knowledge, shaping a specialist who is ready to work from day one.”

Second, companies finance applied science and set real production tasks for universities, involving students in solving them. Metinvest Polytechnic already has successful examples of such cooperation.

Third, the modern format of education envisages the creation of learning spaces on production sites: laboratories, equipment stands, training sessions and master classes delivered by practitioners. This is exactly the model that Metinvest Polytechnic follows.

Moiseyenko added: “We have had a positive experience cooperating with state universities. Students from Metinvest Polytechnic, Dnipro Polytechnic and the Institute of Geotechnical Mechanics studied together at the enterprise through laboratory sessions and master classes.”

He stated that Metinvest and the university are creating conditions that encourage graduates to choose employment at the Group’s enterprises. In particular, Metinvest fully or partially covers students’ tuition fees and provides additional scholarships alongside the educational grant. This dual support is unique among private universities. For those who solve real business tasks, there is a scholarship from the CEO. In addition, the Group reimburses housing costs for graduates who begin their careers at Metinvest enterprises in other cities.

Moiseyenko concluded: “The philosophy of the university is to shorten the path from receiving a degree to obtaining a first job.”
