Azovstal Iron and Steel is ranked among the three largest metallurgical enterprises in Ukraine. The company is a high performance steelmaking company with fully integrated production process – from coke and sinter production downstream to steelmaking and high quality long and flat rolled products manufacturing.
Azovstal’s production facilities comprise of: coke and sinter plants, BF plant with 6 blast furnaces, steelmaking complex being composed of OHF plant and BOF plant; rolled products facilities: plate mill, two rolling mills producing long products (merchant and heavy sections mills) and grind balls and rail fasteners plant.
For the last 30 years Azvostal has been recognized as one of the largest Ukrainian ferrous metallurgy companies and ranked among the 10 largest in CIS.
In Ukraine, it is the most performing steel company in terms of the amount of steel products per a worker and is ranked the 6th in terms of gross income among Ukrainian business entities.
Azovstal developed the technologies of producing of more than 200 steel grades of which he company manufactures its extensive product mix: concast slabs and rolled billets, and high quality rolled products.
Azovstal is the only producer in Ukraine of high quality steel plate 6-200 mm thick and as wide as 1500-3200 mm that is broadly used in shipbuilding, power and special machine building, bridge and offshore deep sea platforms construction, manufacture of large diameter SAW pipes for gas and oil heavy duty pipelines. The entire amount of flat rolled steel produced undergoes 100% non-destructive ultrasonic quality control. Azovstal Iron and Steel Works is the first steelmaking company in CIS to have developed and started production of ultra high strength pipe plate of X70 and X80 steel grades.
Azovstal is the monopolist in Ukraine in production of different types of railroad rails, heavy sections and shapes, rail fasteners, grinding balls. For the last 5 years the company developed the production of 150 new products including 32 types of flat rolled steel, 3 types of rails and 32 types of shapes and structurals.
Since 2001 the company has been producing the UIC type 60 rails and rail joints according the standard of International union of railroads as well as hook flange guard rails of GT140PS type. Azovstal also produces UIC 60 type rails consumed by the customers from Middle Eastern countries.
The company employs around 22 thousand people.
Historical notice
Azovstal Iron and Steel Works was established in 1933 when the first lot of pig iron was produced in the blast furnace No. 1. The first steelmaking unit – open-hearth furnace No. 1 came on stream in the same years.
During 1948-1953 the huge complex of rolling mills was constructed – the company began producing middle and heavy sections and structurals, rails fasteners, grinding balls. Azovstal becomes the integrated steel works.
The start of the second stage of the company’s development is dated 1973 — the unique 3600 plate mill was commissioned. In 1977 the BOF steelmaking plant came on stream followed by EAF plant in 1981.
In 2005 the neighbor coke plant “Marcokhim” was combined with Azovstal Iron and Steel Works.
